Network Question

I have 5 computers on a network and would like to divide them into 2
different domains. For instance, I would like to have 3 pc's on MSOFFICE and
2 on GOLDOFFICE. My question is, can this be done using only one router and
one domain cannot access the other?

I am not an expert, but I accidently discovered how to do this a month or so
ago, when I accidently set the domain for one of the networked computers in
my house to the wrong one. Just open up each computer's network panel, and
wherever it says "domain", enter the appropraite name you want for it. You
can have all computer sin one domain, or even all computers on their own
domains. Keep in mind, you'll have to set up the network connections all
over again, but I think this may solve your problem! Let me know if this
helps you (by posting here).

So, what OS is your DC (domain controller) running?

I suspect that you are talking about workgroups. You can have every machine
in a LAN in a different workgroup but they can still access each other by
name.

I'm also not sure as to why you would have to setup network connections
again as the workgroup name is totally irrelevant to the TCP/IP side of
things.

Sorry, my mistake, the term is WorkGroup. And yes, I now realize you would't
have to re-set all the netowrk stuff up.

You posted the same question twice in the Windows XP networking news
group, and I answered it both times there.

The short answer:

1. There's no easy and secure way to do what you want without more
hardware.

2. Get two more broadband routers, connect each group of computers to
one of them, and connect the new routers' WAN ports to the old
router's LAN ports.

Do you really mean two Domains, or do you mean Workgroups?

If you are running two different Domains, then you must have two
separate Domain Controllers running a Server OS like Windows 2000
Server or Windows 2003 Server. After you set up the second domain and
populate it with your client machines, you'll need to set up trust
relationships between the two domains so they can talk freely.

If you meant two WORKGROUPS, then this process can be done without the
two Servers acting as Domain Controllers. You can just use your XP
Pro machines and yes, you can use your existing routers.

It will be a hassle setting it all up, though with only 5 boxes it's
not too bad.
