What do I need to do to connect two computers together without a
router?
Can I just plug one computer into another or do I need a cross over

Yes you can use a cross over ethernet cable connected to the NIC on each
pc.

You definitely need a crossover cable

Hi,

Yes, if you put a switch or router in between the machines it will introduce
some delay whilst the packets are switched/routed. How much delay is
induced will depend on the switch/router but it will be in the order of ms,
so you will probably never notice the difference.
