Hi

I am trying to get a small network going (PC, laptop, network printer,
broadband). The network was working about 2 years ago but it has not
worked properly since the introduction of broadband.

The laptop has xp professional on and links into another (work) network
with broadband, no problem. It also prints to the network printer on
my home network OK. Its when I try to get talking to the PC which has
the BT broadband connection (and is running xp home edition) that the
problems arise.

I have uninstalled the printer (to simplify matters).

Initially when I pinged from PC to laptop I got the message
"destination host unreachable", however giving the laptop a fixed IP
address - solved this. But I cannot get the laptop to ping the PC, I
keep getting "timed out".

Any help would be VERY useful!!

TIA

Both computers have the same workgroup name? Each has a unique computer
name?

Are you sharing the Internet by using a router, or by running ICS on the
gateway computer? If you are using ICS, it should only be running on the
gateway computer; that is the one with the modem to your BT connection.

Is DHCP enabled for obtaining an IP address?

(Side question, just for curiosity: Is that BT Yahoo!? I am just asking
because my ISP is a similar "Chimera": SBC Yahoo! DSL Service.)

http://bt.yahoo.com/
http://rogers.yahoo.com/
http://sbc.yahyoo.com/

Then there is the Japanese ISP, Softbank:

Right - had problem with printer when I reinstalled but have sorted at
last (connections! - now all firmly in place)

Both computers have same workgroup name
Each computer has a unique name
Sharing the internet via a (fairly old, but workable) hub
Not sure about DHCP, but practically sure it is not being used. Where
can I find this?

Yes, using BT Yahoo + another ISP - not sure why, this is another area
I need to investigate - but later!!

Thanks for your help
