Network problems please advise!

i have just bought a new PC (amd athlon skt 939 64 3200, 1gb ram, 80gb
HDD, msi motherboard with gigabit ethernet running XP pro all updates
installed) and gave my old Pc to me sis (amd athlon skt A 1.4 ghz
running XP has onboard ethernet)
i bought a network cross over cable and installed it between the 2 PCs
ran the XP setup wizzard on both PC and it worked succesfully (well it
will share internet acces and allow me sis to connect to the internet)
but when trying to share files ect between the 2 PCs each PC doesnt
show the other in network connections or anywhere i can see so i cant
acces anything on my sisters PC and vise versa, even tho i have set
shared folders on each PC. please help as my sis now hass all my music
and video (over 20Gb) and otherwise i will have to take out her IDE HDD
and copy everything. please help!!!

Make sure that there's an account on both PCs that is the same in user/pass.
Also make sure that you have permission to access the files. You've got the
hard stuff done but now just make sure that there's an account that matches
and you should be all set. You're both on MSHOME right?

yes we were both set up as MSHOME but its now saying little of no
connectivity it says ''you might not be able to acces the internet or
some network resources. this problem occurred because the network did
not assign a network address to the computer'' when i click details it
tells me my physical address, IP address and subnet mask (whatever that
is) but is blank on default gateway and DNS server and WINS server. any
idea how to re-assign my network IP?? as iv tried repair but does
nothing

Try recreating the connection - also make sure to make an account:

(userA)
(passwordA)

On both systems... Or, if you had an account on the old system, make an
account on your new system with the same login information. Then make sure
that the files and folders you want to share are shared and that file
sharing is enabled in your LAN connection settings.
