Network Problems for New Laptop

I have read a number of postings related to this subject - but there does
not appear to be an immediate response back with a solution. I read that it
may have something to do with some of the latest Windows updates but can
only find the odd discussion about this within the newsgroups. I don't see
much on websites indicating problems with specific updates.

However, here is my problem. At work we have a network of computers (8 in
total) running various operating systems (98SE, XP Home, XP Pro, 2000). We
have been on a buying spree and have purchased 3 new HP Laptops in the past
2 months. The newest one was purchased last week. Up until now, there has
been no problems with the first two laptops getting access to our network.
Implementing these laptops was a breeze. This latest laptop is giving me a
headache! The new HP Laptop came with XP Home but we purchased the XP Pro
Upgrade. I thought the Pro was suppose to make network maintenance issues
easier! :) After the initial setup of the laptop we upgraded to XP Pro.
When we put it on the network we had internet access but no local network
access (can't connect or even see the other computers on the network). We
installed all windows suggested updates.

We have run the network wizard numerous times but still no luck getting
access.

Tonight I brought the machine home to see if I can get access to my home
network. I have tried connecting it to the home network using the hardwired
and wireless arrangements. Each time I can get access to the internet but
not to the network.

Can anyone help point me in a direction to try to resolve this issue?

Many thanks

Gord

Turn off the XP built-in firewall if it is on.

Make sure you're on the same workgroup. OEM and other XP Pro/Home purchases
can be different as to the workgroup.

I am setting it up as WORKGROUP which is the same for the rest of the
office.

I am not sure if this brings any light to the situation or not. On my home
network I have a desk top, a laptop and this new HP laptop. The new HP
laptop can ping the other computers on the network without any problems.
However, none of the other two computers can ping the new laptop (get a
request timed out error).

Do you have a router somewhere at home? If so, can it see your new HP? You
should let the router assign IP addresses.
Did you make the diskette with Network Setup Wizard which helps getting the
computers setup consisten?
Are you certain that the wireless setup for your HP is consistent with the
rest of the network?

Thanks for the feedback.

Yes the router does assign an IP address. I am convinced all computers are
consistently setup the same.

I took the unit back to Staples today for their tech support to try to
figure out. They too could not get it to recognize their in store network -
but also got internet access.

We looked at the demo unit in the store and it was working fine and could
recognize the network.

They suggested a possible fix would be to reformat the HD and reinstall
Windows. Since the laptop was only 1 week old I opted for a complete
exchange for a new one. I get it in the morning.

If I get the same problem I will back visiting the newsgroup.

Thanks again to anyone who took the time to review my problem and especially
those who tried to help.
