Dear Sir
I'm running a small peer-to-peer network of 4 PCs 2
running Win2000 and 2 WinXP (All PCs are Service Pack 1).

Yesterday I had the same problem with both XP machines
and 1 2000 machine. The properties of My Computer, My
Network Places and Desktop dont't work and neither do
network properties (I can't see the Workgroup or drive
mappings) and applications don't run from Start>>>Programs
but they do from the .exe file.

I've got a firewall and all emails are automatically
scanned with antivirus software but I initally guessed I'd
picked
up a virus as the only PC still OK is the one not using
email services? However, I've scanned all PCs and I've run
various patches
but they haven't found anything wrong.

I'm not sure what to do next-short of re-installing.
Please could you help!

Thanks in advance.

Check the path environment variable to see that it is still
set to being with
%SystemRoot%\system32;%SystemRoot%;%SystemRoot%\System32\Wbem;

Dear Roger
Thanks for the help.
I can't check the path environment variable through the
Advanced Tab in Control Panel --> System. It doesn't open.
Can I check it through a Dos box?
Thanks again
Dave

Sorry-I've just accessed the path through the dos command
and the \System32\Wbem is there!
Anything else I can try?
Thanks

system32\wbem is there, but are the first two
c:\windows and c:\windows\system32 ?

Yes there all there!
It's really strange none of the machines can open
properties like the Clock, My Computer or Network Places
and only some of the progams in the Start-->>Programs open
when clicked (although the .exe work ok)?
I'd be really grateful if you have any other ideas or
advice.
Thanks
Dave
