Sorry to cross-post but I was unsure which group is proper to this
query.

I am in the process of trying to set up a simple 2 computer network
using my two Windows XP Home computers linked crossover CAT5 lead.

The only external connection that the computer has is an ADSL Broadband
router

The network cards are accepted by both computers (Network Connections
show "enabled") and when I disconnect or switch off one or other of the
computers the disconnection is noted on the other by a message that the
network cable is no longer connected.

All drives are shared and are confirmed as such with the icons in "My
Computer"

I have been through the New Network Wizard on my host computer and set
it up according to instructions. My network is called the default MSHOME
on both computers

I have created the setup disk and set up the second computer with it
making sure that I have used the same network name (MSHOME). The
computer names are different

All the necessary re-boots have been done on both computers.

On both computers I the go into "My Network Places / whole network and
get three icons Microsoft Terminal Services, Microsoft Windows Network
and Microsoft Client Network.

I click on Microsoft Windows Network and get Mshome network icon shown.
I then click on that icon and get the message "Mshome is not accessible.
You might not have permission to use this network resource. Contact the
administrator of this server to find if you have access permission"

If I go into My Network Places and click on "view network computers" I
get the same error message.

In both cases it will not even show me any of the network computers
including the one I am using.

I am logged on with the only account on each of the computers which is
at Administrator level.

I feel that I am making a very basic error as I cannot make it work
after following all the instructions, possibly with addresses.
At present I get the following readings from ipconfig

Main Computer

Ethernet Adapter Local Area Connection

IP Address 0.0.0.0

Subnet Mask 0.0.0.0

Ethernet Adapter Network Bridge (Network Bridge)
Connection Specific DNS Suffix

IP Address 192.168.0.1

Subnet Mask 255.255.255.0

Default Gateway Blank

Second Computer

Ethernet Adapter Local Area Connection 5

Connection Specific DNS Suffix

IP Address 192.168.0.1

Subnet Mask 255.255.255.0

Default Gateway Blank

Can someone please help?

disable the network bridge, delete it
delete Local Area Connection. to get to them right click
on my network places

Sorry but it didn't work. I disabled and deleted the bridge, but it
wouldn't let me delete or even disable the Local Area Connection!

On my Network Connections I have

under "LAN or High Speed Internet"

1. 1394 connection - whatever that is

2. Local Area Connection (Via Fast Ethernet Adapter)

3. Local Internet Connection 2 (USB Cable Modem

under Bridge

1. Network Bridge

Any further ideas?

You have your network set the same way i do. I get the
same message when I turn either pc off while the other is
on.

Basicly start again. Delete the network bridge icon.

Use the network set up wizard. It will do the job for, by
creating a floopy disc. Run this on the other PC (the one
that doesn't the modem connected)

If this still doesn't work
enable sharing on the folders. Right click(folder/drive)
Also make sure the internet connection is shared.
Firewalls they do there job but can hinder you when
networking. If not set correctly. Are you running any and
if so what is it?

Done it - no change - I've even removed the network card (through
Systems) removed all connections in Network Connections and let Windows
re-detect everything and the set up again using the Wizard.

Norton Internet Security Pro 2004

I have specified the IP address & subnet to be allowed with no problem.

Surely I should at least be able to view my own computer from which I am
using at the time?
I can't even get that.

If I try to map a network drive I get the network name but can read no
drives from it!

Have I missed setting up something?
It would appear so as I managing to connect between the two computers
and run the Internet off both of them!

Finally sussed it.

All I needed to do was to install NETBIOS which Windows XP Home and
Windows XP Pro did not do!

Easy when you know how.

Why on earth does the Wizard not install NETBIOS automatically?
Another case of a Microsoft cock-up!

Were did you do that from?

if your main computer (host) use broadband, and you want to share internet to other computers, the main one (host)must have two ethernet adapter one connect to broadband and one connect to other computer or a HUB...after the main computer can access to internet use the wizard to share internet for client computer...it's very simple...
