I have installed an HP 4550 printer to my XP Home system and I want to share
it with another XP system and a couple fo Win 98 systems. The other XP works
fine. When I try to add it to the WIN 98 systems and browse to find the
printer, the XP computer is there but no printers are shown.

I have checked the firewall to make sure printer and file sharing is an
exception.

Any ideas would be appreciated.

Did you go into the printer folder, check the properties of the printer you
want to share and make sure it's shared?

Did you set up the file sharing on the Win98 boxen? Can they see the XP
computer? Things to check:

1. Make sure all computers are in the same Workgroup for ease of use.
2. Make sure the Win98 boxen are using TCP/IP for the network protocol
and Client for Microsoft Networks.
3. Create identical user accounts/passwords on all computers.
4. From your description, you only have 3 other systems connecting to
your WinXP Home box? If this is right, then you are OK and still within
the 5-connection limit imposed by XP Home (Pro has a 10-connection
limit).
5. You will probably have to run HP's installation software on the Win98
boxen for the printer. Obviously, you select "network" for the location
of the printer during installation.
6. Suggestion - if this is a networkable printer and has an ethernet
card in it, you'd do better to connect it directly to the network via
ethernet or through a printserver connected to the network.

Here are some networking links to help you:

Make sure that the "share name" for the printer is no more than 12
characters long (letters or numbers) and no spaces in it.
