Network printing stopped working after SP2

We have a small (8 workstation) LAN. All but one is running Windows 2000. I
"upgraded" the only XP machine to SP2 and now it doesnt recognise the Epson
AcuLaser printer on the network. All the other workstations are fine.
NB. I have disabled the XP firewall and that doesn't work. The XP machine is
completely up-to-date with all Microsoft fixes, etc. Out engineer has printed
a test page successfully but any attempt to print through an application such
as Word gives a "printer not recognised on the network" message.
We are desperate to get this working as it is impacting our business.

I have had a similar problem since installing the December 2004 XP security
update. When accessing the printer the software states spooling not running;
yet it is. Restoring back to previous point resolves the problem. Not ideal
but gets the situation back to normal. Switching on or off the firewall makes
no difference. I suggest that there is an unyet diagnosed issue with one of
the patches. Uninstalling them one by one does not appear to resolve the
issue. I've not had the time to re-install the patches individually.
Strangely this only affects one PC, a Toshiba Laptop.

Nothing I've tried has resolved the problem.

NOTE TO MICROSOFT - THIS IS A BUG THAT NEEDS FIXING. NOW!

I uninstalled SP2 and everything started to work again. I have just taken
delivery of a new workstation that came pre-loaded with XP SP2 and, you
guessed it, exactly the same problem came back. This time I cannot roll back
to an earlier version because I haven't got one to roll back to.

Has anyone successfully cured this? I'm desperate.

Agreed fully, I have had to stop this machine from downloading updates as the
moment the patches are installed the problem re-appears. THEREFORE PLEASE
MICROSOFT; LOOK INTO THE PROBLEM ASAP!! IT MUST BE AFFECTING MORE USERS
