Network OK in SafeMode Not in Normal Mode

Fred

I need some help here and would appreciate any thoughts/advice.

I have a desktop and laptop running WinXP HOME. Netgear router wired to
DT and wireless card in LT. Internet works fine.

When I try to delete a file in the DT share folder AFTER access by the
LT, I get an error message saying " Can't delete, another person or
program is using the file." This only happens on the DT. If I do it the
other way, (file on LT, access it using DT) then I can delete it on the
LT with no problem.

After lots and lots of testing, I have determined that the problem is on
the DT for sure. If I go to SafeMode with networking on BOTH the LT and
DT, OR if I just go to SafeMode on the DT only, the error goes away and
I can delete the DT files.

When the DT is in normal mode the error returns and I cannot delete the
files unless I reboot the DT.

Some process or thing that runs between SafeMode w/networkiing and
normal mode is causing the problem.

Can anyone suggest where to go from here to find the offending program
or process?

Thanks, Fred

Hi Ken,

I don't think so because the same virus scanner (eTrust) is on both the Desktop
and the Laptop. As I noted below, the process works fine on the laptop, just
doesn't work on the desktop. I've also disabled the virus scanner using task
manager but no luck.

I can also simply reboot and delete the files after the new start. This is
driving me nuts!

What do you mean you disabled it with task manager? If you just killed the
process that might not be enough.

Have you "disabled realtime" on the etrust icon?

Hi Ken,

I used the tray icon and used the "snooze" option. To check it out, I will
remove it from the Startup and will test again.

One more thing, as I've noted in my original post, eTrust and ZA are on both
the LT and the DT yet the problem is ONLY on the DT. Even when I ran BOTH
computers in SafeMode and ONLY the DT in SAFE Mode (so the LT was running ZA and
EZAV) the problem went away which points to the DT as having the problem.

I guess I'm asking if you think I should disable BOTH PCs to test again?

Well typing "net file" at a command prompt on the DT will tell you if
another machine is holding the file. Otherwise I mean just on the DT.

Hello Ken,

Entered "net file" on each machine and got "There are no entries in the list"
from both machines.

For your info, I have completely removed ZA from BOTH machines and have removed
EZAV from the processes and startup sections of msconfig on both PCs. Looking
at task manager on each shows that none of them are running. EZAV is still on my
system but not running.

Just tried everything again and still have the same problem.

Using SysInternals Process Viewer shows that there are "handles" on the DT under
"System." I can manually remove the handles and then I can delete the file.
Sometimes there are three handles, other times there are four which I believe is
related to how often I try to drag the file from the DT share using the LT.

I still worry that even thought the EZAV processes are not running that the
driver might still be running and holding the files open. I would readd the
EZAC program to the startup groups, Select disable realtime, and reboot for
good measure.

Hi Ken,

Well, you were right!

I set msconfig to run EZAV and then set EZAV to NOT run at boot time - so no
real file monitoring. I did it on both computers. I was able to delete the file
on the desktop AFTER access by the laptop.

Now I've reconfigured ZA and it appears to be working even with that added on
too.

There is hope for me after all! Thanks Ken, Fred
