I have an 'internet gateway' icon in my network settings (XP Pro SP2 all
updates). I dont need it and I dont want it but I cant remove it or disable
it. It claims to have been connected [status] 2 days+ but the machine has
only been on 2 hours. It also claims to have received over 350,000,000 bytes
and sent over 24,000,000. I have a belkin BB router and ntl cable. I just
want to shut this connection down (it claims that it cannot be shutdown
because it is in use) and remove it. Can anyone help?

go to My Network Places. On the right click "hide icons for networked UPnP
devices" and the icon will go away.

Sorry the "hide icons" button is on the left not the right side of hte window

No problem. I only know because I did the exact same thing then a few days
later I was like "WTF is this gateway thing!!" Glad to help

I have a similar problem and wondering how to fix. On start up, I get ADSL
modem connected icon displayed and internet gatewat icon displayed in network
connections. Without starting IE, Outlook or any other internet enabled
program, I seem to have my modem actice for about 45 minutes each time with
about 3mb activity in and out. Then after 45 mins, internet gateway
disappears. This is only recent and not sure why, but noticed similar thing
with Inernet gateway status saying connected for days + when connected. Have
reloaded modem but no change. Only other change in recent times was KazaGold
software. Any thougthts/suggestions.

Thanks

I was initially concerned that something else was accessing my computer but
now I think that this is just the way windows sees the router/modem. I
certainly dont think it is anything to worry about any longer. Do you [Jeff]
have show UPnP... in 'My Network Places' enabled, ie 'Hide' is the only
option?

Currently show, but have also changed to hide and doesn't seem to change. I
worked through and came to the same conclusion that all safe and that the
iternet gateway thing was something with SP2. I run Nortons Firewall
separate with Windows firwall off and have checked PC security. My only
concern is still WTF this seems to access the internet throuh the gateway
each time I start up (most days as I work from home a lot) using up monthly
significant ISP allocation for nothing?

An Internet Gateway is when a computer doesn't connect to the internet
directly but connects via a Local Area Network. So this will appear when the
computer is connecting to a router or other compter via a Network that has a
network connection
