I posted this the other day and have not heard from anyone, I will post it
again with some more info,I hope this helps.
Hello All,
I have two computers #1 runs win xp pro sp2 with all upgrades #2 runes the
same. I bought a D-link router and have both computers on the internet I
also networked them together and enabled print sharing and file sharing. The
problem is when I turn off and restart either of the computers I lost the
printer and file sharing and the network. I have to install the network
each time I shut down either one of the computers. I do not lose the
internet connection though. Does anyone know how to stop this from
happening??? Please direct me to the right group if I am in the wrong place.
Thank you in advance
Buzz
The network is still going down but when I go to computer #2 and try the
network and it will not work I go back to computer #1
and disable Norton Internet Security and then go back to computer #2 the
network is working fine, print sharing and file sharing are
working. I can then go back to computer #1 and enable Norton Internet
Security and the network is still running on computer#2 Is there something
that can be done in Norton that will fix this problem???? Thank you all in
advance. I do not use Norton AnitVirus, I use AVG Pro.

What does that mean, exactly? What are the symptoms? Please be specific - I
am not sure what's going on.

I have to install the network each time I shut down either one of the
computers.

Also not sure what "install the network" means...

Never used Norton Internet Security, so can't be of help there. But the
symptoms you describe appear to be a problem with the ability of your
computers to broadcast their presence on the network. Maybe NIS is blocking
this? One of your computers should be automatically assigned to be the
Master Browser. This computer will then broadcast its presence to other
computers on your network and they in turn need to tell the MB that they
are there and connected. The order in which you bootup your individual
computers will determine which computer takes on the role of Master
Browser. You can force a particular computer to always assume that role.
This requires a setting in the registry of one of your computers. Do a
Google to find out how that is done. If it was me, I'd also look at what
ports are being blocked by NIS and unblock the port required by the
broadcasting. You might also want to check and make sure any browser
service is running.

Here are some instructions on setting up a computer to be the Master Browser
on your network:

Links on the page will take you to further info that will help you debug
your problem.

NOStop,
Could you tell me what you run I want to get rid of NIS I already use AVG as
a AntiVirus, any other suggestions I also have Google tool bar for pop-ups.
What do you use for a firewall??? Thank you Buzz

Lanwench,
I think it means that I click on Set up a home or small office link and
then run the floppy on the #2 computer to get the network working. I have
worked on the firewall and now have the net work staying on after I shut
down either computer, but now I don,t have the printer working on the main
computer computer #1. Go figure. Thanks Buzz

The firewall offerings from Sygate, Kerio and Zone Alarm are all good.
Personally I use Sygate.

I run Linux, so viruses are not an issue with this operating system. Don't
know whether you're interested in taking the leap to a real operating
system or not. :-) The only firewall I run is a Linksys Router with NAT.

NoStop,
I have looked into running Linux, but it is so confusing, which version do
you run??? I know there are some forums that can help you install Linux.
Just need to study the change over for a while. Thank you for all the help,
you is the bestest.

I'd suggest looking at Mandriva 2005 LE. You can download the distro for
free from here ...

Pickup the 3 CDs and then burn the ISOs using something like Nero.

Have fun!
