Network going "offline" after VPN client installation

I have several PCs that appear to lose their network
connections many times throughout the day - the "you are
now working offline" message appears in the task bar.
They are not actually off the network as I can click on
the icon and everything synchs up correctly. All these
PCs have recently had various VPN clients installed which
I believe is causing this problem. I have checked the
VPN client manufacturers for any suggestions but haven't
found anything about this problem....

Any suggestions here?

what app is giving you the "offline" message? Do you have a program that is polling (ie Outlook)?
