I am preparing to set up a simple (2 PCs) home network using a crossover
cable. I am installing 2 NICs in the main host computer running XP-SP1, one
connecting the other W98 box, one connecting to a cable modem. It is my
understanding from what I have read that this setup will create a hardware
separation for the two networks. I would then enable the Windows firewall to
the cable modem network adapter. Is this a legitimate way to set up and
protect this simple network or would it still be necessary to add a router
to create a hardware firewall?

If there is a better group to post this to please let me know.
TIA

Hi BP,
It really depends on how secure you need the network to be. IMO what
you have decided to do is sufficient. If you have any data that is of
paramount importance then extra steps could and should be taken. However in
the case of a 2 PC network what you are doing is fine.

The system with the two nics should install Internet Connection Sharing (in
properties of the broadband nic)
