Brand new at this.

I have the two connected with a crossover cable

They see each other and file sharing is OK. I also understand "map network
drive" (I think, at least I get a new drive letter on each PC, and the files
are there and will open.)

what I want to do is to be able to replace an old file on the desktop with
one that is newer on the laptop, and also the other direction. I would like
to do this after the cable is disconnected and then the LAN restored.

I have tried briefcase (maybe I am missing something here) a few other
software solutions (Karen's Replicator), but everything seems to do a backup
and not replace the files.

Is the only way to do this by dragging and dropping and replace the files
manually? I have about 10 files that I want to keep current on both
computers.

Thanks
Bob

Briefcase.

Briefcase should accomodate changes made to the file while it is out on the
laptop .. maybe you don't have the hang of it?

That is very possible, LOL. Not sure if I should be running the files from
the USB drive in the laptop or from explorer. Maybe a few more tries.

In the meantime I found this
http://allwaysync.com/?a=1

Free, not thumbdrive needed and it seems to do exactly what I need.
However I am still going to "get to know" briefcase.

Thanks

I use and recommend Second Copy. Define a profile and specify
"Synchronize" in the properties under "How".

Steve;
Thanks for the link, I just downloaded this and it looks to be exactly what
I wanted. I like the archive feature and being able to run all the profiles
in a group. Three days of Google, and this one never popped up.
Thanks again

You're welcome, Bob. It's a great program, and I learned about it in
the news groups, too.
