I presently run a Windows 2000 Server at home. I have 2 computers connected
to it. I want to shut down the Win 2000 server and install an XP home
network on one of the machines connected to the Win 2000 server.
I would like to do this seamlessly. I do not want to have to re-install all
of my software etc etc.
What do I need to do to accomplish this?

You can not update Windows 2000 Server to any versions of XP. XP is not a
server version of Windows.

As for the two other PCs, what version of Windows is running on them?

Are they using the Windows Domain/Active Directory off the Windows 2000
server? If yes, then you need to get Windows XP Professional, since Home will
never connect to the Windows Domain/Active Directory.

I guess that my explanation was was wanting. Let me draw it out a bit.
Computer A......... Windows 2000 advanced server.

Computer B.......... Windows xp Pro, SP2 a member of computer A's domain

Computer C...........Windows 2000 desk top. Also on computer A's Domain.

Objective: Disconnect computer B from Computer A's domain. Create an XP
Home/ Small office network. Retain all settings.

Note: I have done this. I removed Computer B from Computer A's domain.
I installed Home/Small office network on computer B.
Problem: All of my previous settings, serial numbers configurations were
lost. They were lost when I removed Computer B from A's domain.

How do I retain my previous information after removing B from A's domain.

I have run restore and put everything back as it was.

You can't.

1) Win2K cannot be upgraded to WinXP Home.

2) WinXP Home is not designed to, nor can it truly be made to, join a
domain. Nor does it allow the same sort of seamless access provided by
Win9x, although domain resources can be manually accessed by properly
authenticated users.

While a WinXP Home machine cannot be made a domain member, it's
still possible for a properly authenticated user to access domain
resources from a WinXP Home PC. He/she merely has to enter his domain
user name at password for each connection/share required.

One more time. I guess I have too many elements in the problem. Let me
really simplify this. I have my desktop computer connected to the domain of
my Windows 2000 advanced server. (The server is going to be scraped.)

I took my desktop off of the domain and lost all of my settings. If I put
it back on the domain, I get my settings back.

How do I get the desktop off of the domain and just have it operating as
normal.

No part of my desktop files or configuration are stored on the server.

I appreciate everyones answers but I may have presented a complicated
discription of a very simple problem.

Yes, this explanation makes things much clearer. Basically, you had a
domain and now you wish to set up your lan as a Workgroup. Log into the
workstations as the *local* Administrator. Create some new *local* user
accounts. Copy over any data from the domain user accounts you will
want to keep. Now you can go to the Computer Name tab in the System
applet and change from a domain to a Workgroup. Reboot and log into one
of your new local accounts. Delete the domain accounts.
