Network connectivity issues

I am currently managing I am currently managing a network with 5
computers on it. Up until a month ago they all worked fine. One of the
users took his laptop home and attempted to install norton internet
security (2004-05?). He claims the attempt failed due to some sort of
incompatability with his norton antivirus 2004. He aborted the process
and called it quit for the night. When he came into work his computer
had lost the ability to connect to the network. When he took it home he
lost the ability to connect connect to his JUNO account. Fast forward
one month and I become ther new computer guy. I did notice that his
network connection had been disabled and I enable that. The computer
now says it is now connected to the network, but the user cannot access
the internet or other computers. It attempted to ping other computer
and the network with great success. When I go into the workgroup I can
even see it it, however when I pinged the computer itself I get 100%
packet loss.

His computer has windows xp pro sp2 installed. The company has 5 ip
addresses and it cannot be dynamically assigned. All the addresses have
been entered correctly and as far as I know it was up to date and all
security threats at that time. Also, I have tested the cable itslef and
it works fine with other computers so it most likely is his computer.

Any help is welcome.

Visit the Symantec.com web site, you're going to have to manually remove at
least the failed NIS install, probably the NAV install as well, then
reinstall NAV. Instructions and tools for manual removal can be found
there.

I have uninstalled and reinstalled the norton programs and I have had
no change in connectivity. What has happened inbetween that process is
that the win32 generic host crashed on me do to something in the temp
files. After, I deleted those files i restarted the computer and now i
am able to connect directly to one of the computers on the network,
share its files and its printer. I still cannot ping the machine even
while sitting on it.
