Fresh install of windows xp pro - 2 weeks ago

in local area connection properties
connect using realtek RTL8139 Family PCI Fast Ethernet NIC
click on install - protocol - add

get network connection error msg.

could not add the requested component. the error is:
the specified path does not contain any applicable device
INF's

This is something windows should know about I believe?

Windows update suggested an update for the realtek
network software july 10 2003 - did installing this update
cause this problem? I tryed rolling back the driver. no
change. Any thoughts would be appreciated.

I usually get a similar message if I attempt to add a client. I assumed it
was because there were no clients for that driver to install.
What protocols are installed already?
