network card

for no apparent reason that I can see, windows suddenly doesn't recognize my
network card, 1394 network connection or anything to do with networking.
Device manager doesn't even have a "network adaptors" directory and put all
the network hardware in a "unknown" directory
XP further reports under properties for the network card that the device
isn't working because it couldn't load the drivers. No matter how many times
I load the drivers it does the same thing.
So.... I got a new card and viola! Same probem.
Help.
Is this somekind of virus blocking the network drivers from loading properly?

Boot into Safe Mode, open Device Manager, delete ALL network cards you see,
reboot and let Windows re-detect.

I have already tried that and xp detects it, installs drivers, asks me to
"reboot or hardware may not function..." and when it comes back to life, same
problemo.

Is this some new virus or just a feature (=some new update...) in windows?

I already posted a thread of this problem to m.p.windows2000.hardware
and to this newsgroup, but no one seems to have a fix for this. I have
now five(!) customers with exactly the same problem on their windows
2000 and Windows XP systems. Any help / info might be very useful.

I have tried to uninstall those cards in safe mode. Tried different
cards and differents slots. Even tried NIC's that windows doesn't know
already. I tried to use winsockfix and other programs without any help
to this problem. I have never seen anything like this before...

Yes this looks like a virus.

I'll take a stab and suggest two possible things to look at:

1) One or more Windows "services" required for networking has failed to
start or has stopped for some reason

2) One or more system files required for network support has become corrupt.

There is an option to "repair" the OS when you run setup.exe from the
Windows install disc, but it will discard all your settings and you'll
lose any service packs and "fixes" you've installed.
