network card detects as unknown

Hey,

I have tried installing 5 different PCI network cards in Win XP Pro all with
the same affect. The cards will act like they are installing but come up as
an unknown device, even though the system DOES recognixe the device as a
realtek 8139 NIC for instance. I have tried wireless network cards as well
with the same outcome. Any other device, though, will setup properly and
work fine. I have reset any of the BIOS settings, tried different PCI slots,
etc. Same thing every time. I ran the system file checker, ran a checkdisk,
did it all, it seems. It just seems that the windows networking is hosed
somehow. Any help is appreciated. Thanks.

Hi,

I am having what sounds like the very same problem that you are having Dave.
I am using a Dell 4500 PC which was working just fine. One morning I came
in and my network card was showing as unknown. We have tried installing a
new card, installing new drivers, using a USB, etc... No luck. Next thing
we were going to do was to reinstall Windows.

The only thing I have found on the system that was odd was that the evening
before the problem started I received an auto update "software distribution
service 2.0" I received it on Wed. March 9th at 4:12 (eastern time).

Please let me know if you find a fix for this problem.

Thanks - Virginia
