I have just reinstalled Win XP and cannot seem to get my
machine to recognize the fact that the ethernet cable is
plugged in. I have tested the cable with another computer
and it works fine. I have a cable modem plugged into a
router and then ethernet cables to two different machines,
to the extent that matters.

What's connected to the other end of the cable when you get the error? A
switch, a hub, another computer, or a peripheral device?

Try a different cable with that machine. Make sure the
driver for your network card is correct. Also make sure
that the card is still good.

I have a cable modem, which then is connected to a hub.
From the hub, I am running two lines to two different
machines. The line on the other machine works fine (and I
tried plugging it into my NIC connection without success,
just to test it). I have checked Device Manager and it
says that the NIC device is working, but I am wondering if
it is not and if I need to or can simply buy a new NIC
card and install it (the NIC connection goes to my
motherboard on this machine).

Thanks.

I have tried a different cable, and XP tells me my driver
is good. As far as checking if the card is still good,
the connection actually goes to my motherboard -- how do I
go about testing it to see if it works, or should I just
assume it does not and buy a new NIC card?

I have had the same problem. What I did was go to control panel-network
and internet connections-network connections-right click on the local
area connection icon-and click enable.
