Everytime the LAN cable is moved a little, my network disconnects.
XP shows a note in the system tray that the network cable is disconnected
When I push the cable back, it tells me that the network is now connected.
I find this messages irritating.
IS there a way to stop XP from doing this ?

Start -> Control Panel -> Network Connections -> (right click) Your
Connection -> Properties, uncheck "Show icon notification.."

what I mean is I want to see the icon, but I dont want the tip / note that
pops up all the time.

Your solution will remove the icon altogether.

Right?

I'm confused. You say pushing the cable back clears the message. That
sounds like a hardware issue, not software.

No, that's the way it's supposed to work - when you unplug the cable it says
"You have unplugged your network cable". I'm not sure how you can remove
the balloon for this

Take super glue, coat cable, insert firmly in computer, hold tightly for
about 5 minutes. Result no more messages. If you need to move your
computer just jiggle the cable and it will come out.

Please disregard the post below. Some people post dangerous information as
if it is not dangerous. Doing as instructed below can and most likely will
result in permanent damage to your hardware. Posting such dangerous and
completely wrong information is not very responsible. He has just joined my

That's a rude response, but actually not off base. The easiest thing
would be not to "fix the cable" because the cable is probably fine, but
to replace the NIC. You can get a decent NIC for under $20.

Hey, people, read the original message. The person is not complaining that
his network is not working, he knows what is causing the popup as he has
said so. The thing he wants answered is.....can you stop windows from even
poping up this message. He knows the situation and just does not want
windows to tell him. I have the same issue. I know my cables are good, I
know my nic cards are good, I know my router is good, I have set the nic to
its rated 10/100 state instead of auto detect.......I know my network works
because even when Im surfing websites the stupid message pops up. I just
dont want windows to tell me. I will know when there is a problem. I have
turned off "notify" in the services and I still see it. Is there any way to
turn of this popup message.

Well it's like saying, my car makes a knocking sound when I turn a corner,
is there a way to stop this sound? - No, it's not the sound that you want
to stop, it's what's causing it in the first place.
