I have a desktop with XP Media Center networked to a
laptop w/ XP home (no SP2) thru a router that connects to
the internet. Each system can ping the other but if I do
start/run/\\computername it takes 10 min to over an hour
for the shared folders to appear on the desktop or I get
a 'network path not found' error on the laptop. From
either system if I open network connections and go to the
network, only the local machine appears.
Thanks,

greg

Greg,

These are the things you need to check:
- The comptuers need to be int he same workgroup to see each other
- An account with the same name and password would be easier to allow seeing
files and folders on the computers. If you don't, you will be prompted for
username and password everytime you connect (which for security reasons is
better)

if you are using \\computerName and it does not work, try using the ip
address of the computer.

Rafael,

Thanks. both computers have the same workgroupd name. Using ip address has
the same result as using the computername.

It is incorrect that computers in a Workgroup need the same Workgroup
name to share files. Greg - go through the following network
troubleshooter by MVP Hans-Georg Michna:

It will pinpoint the problem area(s) for you. In addition, here are some
