I have XP wireless setup and am able to get on to the internet with both
computers...but still cannot share files. I was browsing the internet
and I came across this network info area and it was suggested that I
install Netbeiu protocol. I downloaded the file and have installed it,
but according to the web page I am suppose to see a box that says File
and printer sharing...I don't show it. Would this installation work? I
don't know if I have to install on both computers of my home ntw.

Remove NetBEUI. You only want TCP/IP. See these general directions for
file/printer sharing:

Run the Network Setup Wizard on all computers, making sure to enable
File & Printer Sharing, and reboot. The only "gotcha" is that this will
turn on the XPSP2 Windows Firewall. If you aren't running a third-party
firewall or have an antivirus with "Internet Worm Protection" (like
Norton 2005/06) which acts as a firewall, then you're fine. If you have
third-party firewall software, configure it to allow the Local Area
Network traffic as trusted. I usually do this with my firewalls with an
IP range. Ex. would be 192.168.1.0-192.168.1.254. Obviously you would
substitute your correct subnet.

If one or more of the computers is XP Pro or Media Center:

a. If you need Pro's ability to set fine-grained permissions, turn off
Simple File Sharing (Folder Options>View tab) and create identical user
accounts/passwords on all computers.

b. If you don't care about using Pro's advanced features, leave the
Simple File Sharing enabled.

Simple File Sharing means that Guest (network) is enabled. This means
that anyone without a user account on the target system can use its
resources. This is a security hole but only you can decide if it matters
in your situation.

Then create shares as desired. XP Home does not permit sharing of users'
home directories (My Documents) or Program Files, but you can share
folders inside those directories. A better choice is to simply use the
Shared Documents folder.

If that doesn't work for you, here is an excellent network
troubleshooter by MVP Hans-Georg Michna. Take the time to go through it
and it will usually pinpoint the problem area(s) -

To use NetBEUI, you have to install it on both computers. However, I
don't think that NetBEUI is likely to solve the problem:

1. NetBEUI is an unsupported protocol in Windows XP. Microsoft hasn't
tested it, recommends not using it, and doesn't guarantee that it will
work.

2. Nothing in Windows networking requires (or has ever required)
NetBEUI.

3. TCP/IP can handle all networking functions, including Internet
access and file sharing.

4. Installing more than one network protocol in Windows XP is likely
to make networking problems worse, not better.

5. Not all wireless routers support NetBEUI.

So, I recommend un-installing NetBEUI and getting file sharing to work
using TCP/IP.

I don't have any details about your setup, so I can't say for sure
what's wrong. The most likely problem is that firewalls on one or
both computers are blocking access from the other one.

Thanks, I did disable firewalls and antivirus...still can't share. I do
see Share folders in explorer and some files I had shared when I had the
ethernet connection..the dates escape me. Since I went wireless with a
router this time, mainly to get on the internet with my laptop and
succeeded, but like I said I can't share.
