I just wanted to know what exactly this is/dose. It was installed onto my
computer without consent. Im not sure if part of it was already on it but non
the less. It has sort of restricted my administrative acess to the computer.
Im going to reinstall XP soon so was just wondering. Will this stay on the
computer?

Some programs / software you install may need the .net framework, to work
properly. If you don't have any that do, then you can remove it via Add /
Remove Programs.

It provides needed run time files for programs written with .net. If you
remember the old vbrun dll files, they did something similar for programs
written with Visual Basic.

It was installed
onto my computer without consent.

No it wasn't. You consented either explicity when the Microsoft update was
offerred to you, or implicitly when you allowed updates to be installed
without reviewing them to see which you wanted or didn't want.

already on it but non the less. It has sort of restricted my

No, it hasn't. It doesn't hurt you inj any way. All it does is permit you
run some programs that wouldn't be able to run if it weren't there. You may
not need it now if you don't run any programs that need it, but chances are
you'll need it soon, as more and more programs need it. If I were you I'd
leave it there.

When you reinstall, *nothing* stays on the computer. But it will be offered
to you again as a Windows update.

It probably came via Windows Updates or if you did not see it
specifically and it turned up it came via HP Printer Drivers or some
software you put in recently.

Personally I know what it is, I know what it "says" it does, I even
believe its good from a software coders POV however I do not need it
or want it paranoid? moi? no but I always look a gift horse in the
mouth especially one that turns up for no obvious reason and wants to
install itself in its own admin account then drop out of sight.

I never install it on anything and I always advise my clients to get
rid of it if they do not need it and offer them alternatives that do
not use .NET framework, (nice little earner as it happens). Usually
all I have to do is show them the .NET admin account and explain the
sudden change in login behaivour and they are bloody annoyed and want
it out ASAP.

There are people who wish to use it and need to use it and know what
they are doing, however most of my clients are small businessess that
do not want or need .NET in order file and print letters & photos.

Contrary to what M$ would like us all to believe .NET is not taking
over the world and there are hundreds of alternates, for eg HP supply
basic printer drivers online that run the printer without all the crap
bloatware and without .NET another example is the popular imaging
software Norton Ghost 9 which is a .NET user and can be replaced with
many others including the superb Acronis suite. Ghost 2003 also does
not use .NET but then its not exactly user friendly either.

Lets put it this way, if somebody was selling .NET framework for say
$30-00 a seat how exactly would they sell it to you and would you buy
it and install it given that there are alternatives that don't need
it?

Come to think of it thats a problem going to become an issue for M$ as
a whole in the next 18 months or so innit?

8-)

hmmmm, need some sales pitch to convince me?

Leave it out!
