.NET Framework installation hang

Help! When trying to install the .NET Framework, the system hangs every
time about 80% of the way with the status of "Gathering required
information..."

After a period of time i get a message that the installer stopped
responding.

I also find that any program installs with "Installshield" installers tend
to hang for about 20 minutes during their install.

Anyone have any clues?
