It appears to download ok. But then when it starts to install, it
goes about 1/4 to 1/3 of the way and then quits. Windows Update
simply tells me that it cannot install the update. Nothing shows up
in event manager and this account is an administrators account
(Windows XP Home Edition). Is there something I need to check for or
delete?

Have you tried downloading from here?

Good luck

I have the same problem. I can't get certain types of programs to install. I thought that .Net Framework might be the solution and *IT* won't install. I keep reading about all sorts of solutions and none of them work for me. I don't even get error messages. I just click to install (as I would normally) and then the hourglass symbol appears briefly (as it would normally) and then nothing happens. No lock up. Nothing. I've been trying to solve this for many months. It would feel like a miracle to me if it were solved.
