While trying to upgrade my office computer from Windows
ME to XP, my "upgrade" cd says it cannot identify any
previous windows products on my computer and is requiring
that I insert the original Windows ME CD.

I have the product key number (listed on a valid Windows
ME Sticker located on the side of my computer box) but no
CD.

Why is it not identifying the previously installed
product? What happens if I don't have the Windows CD
that was originally supposed to come with my computer?

Is there any way around this or do I have to now go out
and buy the full-blown product?

If ME has become corrupt,or if ME cd arent available,
simply install xp cd,restart computer, boot to cd,
try installing when the info page appears to do so.
You can also, select recovery, press the enter key for
the password,at the curser type:FORMAT C: /FS:ntfs
when its thru,type:EXIT
Now let it reboot, again select, boot to xp cd,this time
select, install xp.ME will be deleted in format

Andrew, you haven't addressed what the OP is going to do with a formatted
drive, an XP upgrade CD< and no qualifying version of Windows to use for the
upgrade.

You need to have something -- either on the hard drive, or a previous
version on disk. There's no other way around it.
