I installed WinXP upgrade over Win98. The upgrade belongs
to a non-profit that I was working for. Now, I am no
longer working for them and need to give up the licensed
copy I've been using. I am going to buy a new copy of
WinXP so as to have my own license. As you know, with a
dial-up modem, it takes for ever to get the patches and
security updates downloaded from MS. I'm wondering if
there is a way to install the new copy without having to
go through the hours of upgrading again. OR, perhaps you
know of a better way of doing the license exchange and
keeping everything else the way it is on my computer.

Charlie;
Can you simply give the non profit your license?

If both copies are identical (can not be a mix Pro/Home,
Full/Upgrade, Volume License/Retail etc)

If both are Pro or both are Home, perform a Repair Installation.
Repair Installation:

Windows Updates will need to be reinstalled.
Install Service Pack first and by itself.
Then install ALL Critical Updates no more than 4 at a time,
Disconnect the network/modem cable before starting repair and do NOT
reconnect the cable until repair is completed and firewall is
installed/enabled.

You can use the Windows Update Catalog download the updates at a
computer with high speed internet access and burn updates to CD:
