Hello,

I'm in need of restoring a file that is of extreme value to me. The file
system is NTFS, OS Windows XP. There is a large array of recovery tools but
which one is the most reliable and give most high success rate?

By far the most reliable tool that gives the best success
rate is a restoration from backup, where all files of
extreme value reside. A 2.5" USB disk in an external
USB case makes for a highly effective and low cost
backup medium. Time to review your backup philosophy.

If this is not an option then I would do this, keeping in
mind the ***extreme*** value of the file:
1. Stop using the machine ***now***.
2. Get a free copy of Acronis DriveImage from here:
https://www.acronis.com/homecomputing/my/updates/
3. Install it on a different PC.
4. Connect the disk containing the deleted file as a slave disk.
5. Create an image of the partition containing the deleted file.
6. Restore this image to a spare disk.
7. Try a recovery tool.
8. Repeat Steps 6 and 7 until successful.

If you keep using the machine or if you install recovery
tools on the machine containing the deleted file then you
greatly diminish your chances of a successful recovery.

I *think* u could run several to recover the same file & compare.

Any 1 run now is better than the best run Fri. Stay off ur PC.

Any advise given is my attempt to show appreciation for all
the excellent help I've received here but I'm no MVP so it
may only apply NUGS (Normally, Usually, Generally, Sometimes :)

Try R-Studio software from this site:
www.r-tt.com
If you know the exact file name as well as the file extension then you mya
provide that as a search option in R-Studio for greater chances of recovery.

I find that doing a monthly backup to a DVD-R, using Nero, is the best
method.

The frequency depends on how much data you're prepared
to lose in a worst-case scenario. In your case it's one month.
In my case it's one week. With a bank it's zero.

I'm not fond of backing up to DVD-Rs or CD-Rs: I have
had quite a few that became unreadable after one or two
years. I have had far fewer problems with hard disks, even
though they are more fragile.

I agree. CD-Rs don't seem to have a very healthy shelf life (can't really
speak for DVDs yet as I've really only recently switched to burning to them,
but would suspect the same). My backup strategy is mix of the two though:
my data get's backed up to a hard drive every fews days and to a CD/DVD once
a month.
