Hello,

Basically the question is should I reapply SP2 to my Windows XP Pro /
SP2 setup but the history is as follows!

1. I was running Ad-aware and saw that it was working on the D drive
so I decided to stop the software by clicking on the cancel button.
This seemed to work OK.

2. I then saw a message re having finished updating (I assumed that
this was Microsoft auto update) and needed to reboot.

3. On rebooting I got the error message "Winlogon.exe application
error, cannot read memory 0xe9cae20e etc" followed by a similar
"logonui.exe application" error etc.

4. I found that by going first into safe mode that I could then reboot
and get into my normal account but could not get into my normal
account unless I went into safe mode first.

5. Once in my normal account I used sfc /scannow and was asked for my
Windows XP Pro CD (my CD had SP1 on it). This I put in and the process
continued and after this the winlogon and logonui errors did not
appear when booting up and I was able to get into my normal account.

6. BUT! I have just opened Outlook 2003 and it came up with several
error messages and the need to close down. After re-booting Outlook
seems OK at the moment.

Could this be caused by the fact that when using sfc /scannow the
Windows XP Pro CD had SP1 on it and my PC has SP2? Could scannow have
copied SP1 version dll etc and do I need to reapply SP2 and/or get
some updates again from Microsoft?

What should I do?!

Cheers

Is there this folder on the system: C:\WINDOWS\ServicePackFiles ? If so
sfc will look in this folder for the cached files from the SP2 update. If
it's not there then it will pull it from the CD. You can look in event
viewer on one of the logs (I'm not sure which one) to see what sfc did.

If things are running ok now, I wouldn't do anything or worry about it. If
you want you could do a repair on the Office installation. Open one of the
apps, click Help and then Repair. Also you might want to consider making an
XP installation CD that has SP2 integrated on it. That process of doing
this is called slipstreaming. Here are some links for how to do that.
Autostreamer makes it easier.

Here is a link with info on sfc and how it works.

Rock,

There is a C:\WINDOWS\ServicePackFiles folder so that's one good
thing!

Thanks for the idea re above - will follow that up.
