I recently had to reload XP on my laptop and somehow hit "Enter" after only
entering the first 3 letters of my name. Can I go into the Registry and
amend my name? Thanks much! "Lau"

Microsoft Registration: Start > Run and type: REGWIZ /R ,
and hit enter.

If you already created files and folders it is better to:
Open Control Panel
Open User Accounts
Click on the User you need to change the name for...
and finally click on Change my name

Now, wasn't that easy! Thanks so much :) Laura

Not so fast.. I have a similar problem and its resolution is still
incomplete... In my environment on XP Home, an "administrative" user name
was used to "set up" the system, but for a portable computer not in a domain,
the user name is no longer appropriate. Using the Windows XP Home
administrative options, the administrative user name was changed to that of
the "owner" of the PC. Also, the registry editor was used to try to
eliminate the administrative name by changing it to the "owner" name.
Unfortunately, under the "task manager" this particular machine still shows
processes running under a now non-existent "administrative" user name, and
I'm at a loss to answer two questions:

1). How can I stop the computer from showing the administrative name in
Task Manager?

2). Is, as I currently suspect, an intermittent problem this portable
exhibits, related? When "Task Manager" shows a thread running under the
non-existent administrative account, the system sometimes will not shut down
properly. The only way to turn it off is to withdraw power. Shutdown from
the task manager does not work. The standard shut down options seem to be
ignored by the system. The problem seems more acute when/if programs in
Office 2003 which were installed under the now non-existent administrative
user have been running invoked by the current user name which was supplied to
replace (via edit) the administrator.

I'm at a loss as to where to go from here.

What processes are they?

It could be a couple of services that are set to run under that account....

I've given up on trying to get all the processes right. It now appears that
the main problem I was having with the portable was due to the manufacturer's
decision to ship the hard drive formatted as FAT32 instead of NTFS. "Active"
processes like those associated with the McAffee virus scanner provided by
Comcast were constantly getting hosed. When the drive structure was
converted to NTFS and all available software updates applied to the system,
the problem has gone away. One thing I found extremely helpful was setting
the system to "notify" but not to download whenever updates were available.
I found that my wife was hosing background downloads by pressing the button
to shut the system down rather than letting it take its' time.
