Road Runner

Hi: (I'm using a neighbors PC as mine died)

I have Windows XP Home Edition (with ALL the updates). Today upon boot I
get a solid blue screen and then the words: Loading personal settings.
This text stays up for 1 second max.

Then the screen changes to my normal background (fall leaves scene). After
a few seconds the blue screen returns and I have the text: Logging Off.
Then the text: "Saving your settings" or something like that.

Then, and this is weird, instead of closing down, windows tries to restart
and I get the text: Loading Settings.

It loops infinately logging off and rebooting.

This PC is 2 years old and it is an HP. It has 2 partitions with the first
(D:) containing the contents of what would be the boot CD (HP does not send
it with the PC - you have to order it). The second partition (C:) has the
operating system and all software.

I tried F8 to boot into safe mode but that goes into the looping as well.

I tried my neighbors Windows XP Pro but I am afraid it will wipe out the
folders. I thought of using XP PRO BUT then I won't have the HP Recovery
routines to install the contents of D:

How do I proceed? Is there a simple fix (ha.) or if I can get windows to at
least boot I could run the HP Recovery to reinstall from D:

Help! and thanks in advance. I do not have SP2 installed.

I have the same problem as Road Runner. I'm afraid I don't understand the
instructions that you've provided. All I have is a win98 boot disk. I can't
log on to Win XP, so I can't edit the registry. Please help!

Hi Tim,

Concentrate on the second half of the instructions, the part about loading
the Recovery Console. Your Win98 boot floppy is useless unless you are using
FAT32. At what point are you getting hung up?
