I posted a problem with installing a scanner 7/1 at 8:40AM and have received
no responses to date. This is a plea for an MVP to please responsd.

Incidentally, I've found that if I plug the scanner into the computer with
no driver installed, it is recognized as an "unknown device" just like when
I plug it in when called for by the driver installation program.

Thanks in advance.

Yes, I certainly did too! Perhaps we should just return on Tuesday and
leave everyone helpless! On the other hand, I do remember posting about 50+
times on Christmas Day, so perhaps I'm exempt from days off.

Actually it would be Tuesday morning, since this is a Holiday weekend in the
US. Happy Fourth!

Typical....

You wait for ages for an MVP, then 3 turn up at once ;o)

Did so every time.

Boy, was excited to get 9 replies to my post until I read them and found 7
didn't address my problem.

Memorex 6142U with driver software downloaded.

I had this working once and scanned a few items successfully but clobbered
things trying to use TextBridge, a program on the Memorex disk. So, I know
the driver should load and recognize the scanner.

Physically disconnect your scanner from your PC, uninstall it's software,
then download and reinstall the software.

I've done what you suggest many times. I suspect some switch or registry
entry is not being reset properly. If so, I need help from someone who has
a deep understanding of drivers and their installation. Can you steer me
towards a source of such knowledge? (Perhaps another MVP)

Thanx.

John;
Uninstall the driver as much as you can and disconnect the scanner.

Start/Run
Type "regedit" ENTER
Navigate to HKEY Local Machine\System\CurrentControlSet\Enum\USB
Under USB there will be one or more "Vid_****&pid_****"
Open them up one at a time until you find the one for your scanner.
Then delete that Vid key under USB

Following this should be safe but back-up the registry just in case:

Try installing the scanner on another computer.
Otherwise contact the scanner manufacturer, something may be wrong
with the scanner.

I have a Microtek scanner that required booting into Safe Mode and
installing the latest software to properly update the TWAIN drivers.
Try doing this. Uninstall the software with the scanner disconnected.
Boot into Safe Mode, install the drivers again, REBOOT, then once
Windows is loaded, plug in your scanner and see if that helped. Also,
installing the latest driver may not be the answer, try the software
that came with it if the new drivers don't work. Just repeat the above
steps and install with the original if the first try doesn't work.

Thanx for the suggestions, Nathan. Unfortunately, they didn't work.

Thanks muchly,

John

OK, here comes a series of questions :)

1. Does the scanner even show up? Go to Control Panel, then to Scanners
and Cameras. Now try to Add Device. Use the drivers from the CD.
2. Is this scanner USB 2.0? Have you tried installing your latest
chipset drivers to make sure the motherboard is functioning proplery?
3. Have you tried installing this scanner on a different computer and
gotten it to work since you've encountered problems?
4. If it works on other computers, you may want to consider a clean
install of Windows (meaning format the harddrive, and reinstall
Windows). If you chose to do this, make a good backup of your data (I
always forget).

Also, try Start-Run-devmgmt.msc and see if you can find the device in
there or if maybe it is showing up with an error.

Nothing appears in Scanners and Cameras. Both the downloaded and CD
"drivers" are ".exe programs" rather than the actual drivers. When I run
either, some files load and the program stops and says "plug in the scanner
now", which I do. After loading, I check device manager and find an
"Unknown device" entry has been added to "USB Sereal Bus Controllers" and,
when I check properties for this unknown device it says, "no drivers are
installed for this device". Then, if I open Photo Suite III and try to set
up to scan, one Twain device is listed - "Scan Manager". Then, if I select
it and try to scan, I get a "scanner not found" error message.

If I unplug the scanner, the "unknown device" entry is removed and, if I
uninstall the program, "Scan Manager" no longer appears in the Twain device
list in Photo Suite.

Please note that I had the scanner working once. When it was working, I had
a second choice in the Twain list. Whatever it was, I took it to be for the
scanner, selected it and scanning was fine. I bombed things executing a
Text Bridge program and choosing a scan type from a list presented which I
probably shouldn't have. Also, it's a USB 1 port.

As for chipset drivers, since the thing worked once, are they apt to have
been impacted? Also, I don't know how to install chipset drivers anyway.

As for trying it on another computer, I have a working-fine scanner on my
Win98 desktop and really don't want to chance messing that up.

Yes, I could do a clean install. But, if it comes down to that, I may just
forget about installing a scanner on my laptop.

Thanx again for your help, Nathan.

I tried this with no success. When the scanner is installed as an unknown
device with no drivers, there is a "Vid_****&pid_****" entry for it. When I
tried to delete it, the computer wouldn't let me. But, when I uninstalled
the program using add/delete, the entry went away.

Thanx for trying to help.
