Need Java Virtual Machine for XP/IE

I'm running XP and Windows IE on a new Dell laptop. On
my old machine, using Win 2000, I could go to an internet
site that was enabled by java applets and it would tell
me that the site was trying to send me said applets, I'd
load 'em and be off and running.

Now I get a dialogue box entitled "Install on Demand" and
it tells me that I need to install Java virtual machine.
When I click on the download link within the box, it
takes me to a MS window that says "We're sorry, you
cannot view this page because it requires the Microsoft
Java Virtual Machine (MSJVM). Your machine does not have
the MSJVM installed. For more information please visit
www.microsoft.com/java."

When I follow the link to the MS java info page it talks
about how they will support Sun's Java till September and
offers options and alternatives but they don't offer to
let me d/l a copy of the MS version. In essence I'm
being told I can't download MS java until I install MS
java (makes no sense to me.)

Is there a way to get the MS version or should I follow
the link to the free download of the Sun version? Is the
Sun version less desirable, less functional, than the MS
version? I'm not developing code here, all I want to do
is establish a realtime video link to a given site.

Thanks for any help / advise you can offer.....

That's possibly true, does windows update offer security fixes for the sun
one if it's installed? You'd think somewhere between them they could agree
to fix that exploit.

Oh well, sometimes legal issues work to everyone's disadvantage...

Charlie,
It's not really advisable to reinstall the MS version, as this will
expose the user to the below:

Replace Missing Java Virtual Machine

The Microsoft Version
http://n6hb.org/s-a/JAVA-ts.htm#ie_jvm
The Sun Microsystems version
http://www.java.com/en/download/windows_automatic.jsp
A utility to switch between them (if you install both)

That's up to Sun.
MS will issue no more security updates to the MS Java VM.

I dunno about that...
This excerpt from Microsoft seems to say otherwise:
"This extension allows Microsoft to support the MSJVM until September 30,
2004, and gives Microsoft the ability to address potential security issues,
effectively giving customers another year to manage the transition."

Missed that one. Thanks.
