How do I reinstall Windows XP? When I insert my CD, a message says the
version on my PC is newer (I downloaded SP2).

Four attempts to boot/reinstall from the CD result in failures. One message
said that txtsetup.sig is corrupt or missing. The other says that dmload.sys
is corrupt.

I ran a trial copy of Security Task Manager that provided a STOP message of:
(0x0000008E,0xc0000006,0x808A9COE,0x00000000)

Thank you.

Are you wanting to clean install? To do a clean install, boot the Windows XP
install CD-Rom. Setup inspects your computer's hardware configuration and
then begins to install the Setup and driver files. When the Windows XP
Professional screen appears, press ENTER to set up Windows XP Professional.

(Note: If your drive controller is not natively supported then you'll want
to boot the Windows XP CD-Rom. Then *F6* very early and very important (at
setup is inspecting your system) in the setup to prevent drive controller
detection, and select S to specify additional drivers. Then later you'll be
prompted to insert the manufacturer supplied Windows XP driver for your
drive controller in drive "A")

Read the license agreement, and then press the F8 key to accept the terms of
the license agreement and continue the installation.

When the Windows XP Professional Setup screen appears, all the existing
partitions and the unpartitioned spaces are listed for each physical hard
disk. Use the ARROW keys to select the partitions Press D to delete an
existing partition, If you press D to delete an existing partition, you must
then press L (or press ENTER, and then press L if it is the System
partition) to confirm that you want to delete the partition. Repeat this
step for each of the existing partitions When all the partitions are deleted
press F3 to exit setup, (to avoid unexpected drive letter assignments with
your new install) then restart the pc then when you get to this point in
setup again select the unpartitioned space, and then press C to create a new
partition and specify the size (if required). Windows will by default use
all available space.

Be sure to apply SP2 or at least these two below to your new install before
connecting to any network. Internet included. (sasser, msblast)

I think you might have a memory stick issue.

You can download Memtest86 and scan you memory:
http://www.memtest86.com/#download0

If you have a floppy drive on your pc the easiest is probably to download
the Windows installation package, otherwise you can download
the ISO file and burn it to a cd first.

Using the floppy or cd, reboot your computer and let it run the tests (takes
an hour or something like that).

Note that memtest86 will scan indefinately, it does ten tests and the starts
all over again, if you didn't get errors the first time you can quit it.

You shouldnt get ANY errors at any of the tests, if you do you have a bad
memory stick.

You are getting the installation error because you are apparently trying to
do a Repair Install (not a Clean Install) and the operating system
installed is at a higher Service Pack level than your XP install cd.

You can fix this by slipstreaming Service Pack 2 into your instal media.
This is easy. I like AutoStreamer, but there are other methods.

Thank you pblse and Malke. I will try the steps you recommend this weekend.
Best regards.

The boot install fails. I don't get the Windows XP Professional screen. I
get the errors listed in original post.

Sounds like you're not booting the CD-Rom. Possibly set the boot order in
cmos setup to CD-Rom first in boot sequence. Also look for the keystroke (if
necessary) at POST to force boot from CD-Rom drive or check your mobo/pc
manual for instructions.

Also please always post any error messages verbatim.

This means that your installed OS is at a higher service pack level
than is the WinXP Pro CD you're using. You'll either need to uninstall
SP2 (Control Panel, Add/Remove programs) before attempting the upgrade,
or try slipstreaming SP2 into older WinXP installation.

For slip-streaming the service pack and subsequent updates to WinXP:

Problems copying files or corrupted files during installation are
most often caused by defective or sub-standard hardware; in order of
likelihood, either RAM, the hard drive, or the motherboard. On very
rare occasions the CD drive or installation CD is the problem.

posted the error messages verbatim.
