I am using Windows XP Home. 3 days ago, I got advice off the Microsoft site about getting rid of files that are uneeded. So, I performed a search for .GED files and when the list came up, I deleted them. I them did a search for .TMP files, and deleted all of them, except of about 4 or 5 that came up as shouldn't be discarded, so I didn't delete those. I also downloaded and used Registry Healer, which I got at the Microsoft site. It would only "repair" some of the "errors" that came up in my registry, because I didn't buy it

The problem: My computer does not want to start Windows. The Windows screen that is black appears, and the little monitor keeps going, and then it goes to the DOS screen and gives me options to start in safe mode, start normal, etc. I have tried several of these and the computer goes right back to that Windows black screen and then repeats the drill over and over again. I have restored my computer 3 times and when I do, everything is fine...until I shut down. Then when I turn it back on again, it goes through the whole routine again of not starting up

Why is my computer not staying restored after shut down

Should I just re-install Windows XP? Will that take care of the problems I now have

Thank you very much.

Microsoft does not support any registry cleaner for Windows XP. You did not
find "Registry Healer" on the Microsoft web site - it was created by KSL
software:
http://www.fixregistry.com/regheal/index.htm.

I suspect that "Registry Healer" did more hurt to your system than healing.
If you are unsuccessful in using System Restore to restore your system to a
point before you started tinkering with it, and you are unable to identify a
likely cause for your problem, you should try to reinstall Windows XP,
following the directions in this article from the Microsoft Knowledge Base:

"How to Perform an In-Place Upgrade (Reinstallation) of Windows XP"
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;315341&Product=winxp.

Done correctly, this procedure is very safe, but it's always a good idea to
backup all files and folders that are important to you before reinstalling
Windows.

And stay away from so-called 'registry healers'. Your computer will be
healthier without them.

Thank you, Rocky. I will give your suggestion a try, and I will also take your advice. Will let you know if I am successful.
