Can someone tell me how I can access the network log on
windows 2000 server, telling me who and when logged on to
the network? We are running Windows 2000 professional
server.
Based on the information you are asking for and how you
phrased the terms, I can only assume you are not very
familiar with administering a Microsoft network or server.
You want to access the Event logs with the Event Viewer.
Microsoft incorporates it in the MMC (Microsoft Management
Console) and probably the easiest way to get to it is to
right click on "My Computer" of the system you want to
access the log and click "Manage".
Once in the MMC you have Event Viewer as an expandable
section. Expand that and click on "Security" to access
the logs that show logon and logoff details. Double
clicking on a log entry will bring up full details of the
logged event. You will need to be signed on to the local
system as an Administrator to access all of the logs.
In any domain you can also view these logs via a remote
connection (though this can be much slower) by using
the "Action" menu (with the "Computer" parent in the MMC
tree selected) and selecting "Connect to another
computer".
