I am trying to turn off the Track Changes feature on a
document that was emailed to me. However, on my toolbar
and in the tools menu it is greyed out??? My only guess
is that the document might be protected.

Help!! Thanks!

Thanks...I have tried that. If my only option
is "unprotect" and not "protect" it should be safe to
assume that the document has been protected - Correct??
But, does protecting a document keep you from being able
to turn off Track Changes??

Thanks!!!!

Try Tools|Unprotect. You may be prompted for a password.
Man, I sound like a dialogue box...

If your only choice is Unprotect, then yes, the document is protected
For the second part of your question, Documents created in Word XP or (earlier versions) can be protected for 3 different things, and they behave like this
Tracked Changes--keeps the change history. While the documnet is protect you will not be able to turn Track Changes off, nor will you be able to accept or reject changes. In order to do these things, the document must be unprotected

Comments--The document text can't be altered, but you can add comments either from the Track Changes toolbar or from the Insert menu

Forms-Only Form fields may be edited. With this option you can decide to Protect only certain sections of the document, if you have used Section Breaks to set these sections apart from the rest of the document
