Jeff

I was wondering if anyone can help me with a problem that
even my college's IT department couldnt even figure out.
Ok, I was changing my default server from AOL to Internet
Explorer because I am now using a LAN connection rather
than dial up, and after doing that, i restarted my
computer and the log on scrren came up before going to my
desktop. The problem is, I never had a user name or
password for this computer and usually if you dont, you
can click on the cancel button, but the cancel button is
greyed out and you cant X it out either. If anyone has
any suggestions or know of any way how I can get to my
desktop, can you please e-mail me! Thanks for your time
guys! I appriciate it!

When you first loaded Win2000, you were prompted for a
password for the "administrator" account. At that stage you
either left the password field blank, or you entered a certain
password. You now need to do the same: Enter "administrator"
as the account name, and whatever password you specified
at install time.

When finished, you should plan ahead and create a second
admin account. Consider how many keys you have for your
car, and why it's more than one set!

Thanks for replying Pegasus, but there is a problem with
that too. When i was at the screen for a user name and
password when i first installed it (a few years ago) i
clicked cancel and it sent me right to my desktop. After
that, i went into control panal and changed it so i never
need a name or password to log on. And now that this
happened i dont know what to put in. I tried
clicking "OK" when it comes up but it doenst take it. If
you can help me out some more i would greatly appriciate
it. Thanks alot everyone!

Unfortunately your memory is tricking you. It is not possible
to cancel out of a password prompt during the Win2000
installation - either you enter a password, or you leave the
password blank. If you left it blank then it would still be
blank - did you try it?

If this easy method of logging on does not work then you
have to use the painful method:
http://home.eunet.no/~pnordahl/ntpasswd/bootdisk.html
It works but it will be a strong reminder never to be pushed
into this situation again.

If your system disk uses the FAT32 filing system (as opposed
to NTFS) then less painful ways are available.
