My Dell 2400, 512 ram, has run flawlessly with Windows XP Pro for about 2
years. In the last several months I have gotten a blue screen which says
windows has shut itself down to prevent damage and if this is the first
time just restart. If it isn't the first time they suggest looking for
conflicts and dump something or other.

Yesterday the computer would not restart "Stopped at checkpoint 2."

With the help of Dell I inserted a Dell Repair disk and was coached to type
in c:\>chkdsk r. The computer churned for several hours and found mistakes.
After the churning I restarted OK. I thought all was OK but in the middle of
the night the blue screen came back. That time I could restart OK.

I have no idea what is going on and where to start looking to fix this
situation.

Help please

What do the error say? You did not say if you manage to get it started again
using the previous method. Sound like your hard drive is failing. If you can
get back in check your eventviewer system and application logs. Click
Start/Run Type in eventvwr and click ok. and look for errors and warning you
should see a lot of disk errors to indicate the disk is going bad. You
should try to backup your personal files and folders as soon as possible. If
there aren't any disk errors make sure your computer is clean by running
your up to date Antivirus and Antisypware programs.

It's probably caused by a faulty device driver; Go to My Computer properties
and click on Manage > Device Manager > and expand all device types to see if
you have any device which shows a conflict. If any is having a problem,
right click on it and select Uninstall and reboot the computer for Windows
to install an appropriate driver... if necessary update the driver if one is
having trouble. If no devices appear to be having a problem, reboot the
computer and press F8 at the beginning of the reboot and from the Safe Mode
Options select Last Known Good Configuration.

Hope this helps

What was the Blue screen error message? Post back with that verbatim.
Also download a drive diagnostic utility from the hard drive
manufacturer's web site. This will make a bootable floppy or CD. Boot
from it and run the diagnostics. Make sure you have a full and complete
backup of important data.

Thanks for your replies. It turns out that the villain was Probably an
outdate graphic Accelerator Driver. Dell alerted me. Why did it get obsolete
suddenly???

It's not uncommon; causes that come to mind are damaged disc sectors,
fragmented disc, sudden current fluctuations, old/incompatible drivers, etc.
