Last night everything was fine with my computer. I am running XP Home. I was
transferring some files from my hard drive to an external hard drive and then
all of a sudden I noticed almost all of my desktop icons were gone as well as
most of the files in my C: folder. I restarted my computer only to get the
following message:
"NTLDR is missing, press any key to restart." I tried downloading the files
as suggested on Microsoft.com onto a floppy and reboot to it. When I
restarted, it checked the floppy but nothing happened and I still got the
same messge.
I next put in my Windows XP original disk and got to the Recovery
Console screen. Now I get stuck. It says:
1: C:\Windows
Which Windows install would you like to log onto? I choose 1 and hit Enter.
Then it says:
"Type Admin Password:" Here I just hit enter because i dont have an admin
password. When I do it says:
"C:\WINDOWS>"

I tried typing Fixmbr after the above, but then it says that if I cannot
access my hard drive not to continue with Fixmbr as it might make it worse.

What do I do now? Is there anyway to recover my drive? I just replace my
hard drive a year ago, bought it brand new. I am using a laptop without an
A:\ drive but I have an external A:\ drive that plugs in using USB.

Thanks for any help you can give me.

I'm not sure what disk your using but does it have FiXMBR and FIXBOOT
on it? it should. and you might need to type in
A:\FIXMBR or A:\FIXBOOT

There is another way to access those commands, by using your XP CD and
booting into the Recovery Console
http://www.kellys-korner-xp.com/win_xp_rec.htm
and
http://tinyurl.com/nrx2o

There are two repair options: The first repair option presented is via the
Recovery Console - do not select this option. Setup will proceed and you
will be presented with another screen stating a Windows installation has
been found (labeled #1 - same as first repair option) select to repair the
currently installed XP - setup will continue as if reinstalling XP.

Thanks for all your help. I was able to boot after I chose repair from the
install CD.
