I dug a hole for myself. I was having problems with XP on
my Pavilon xt155 notebook.
I uninstalled the SP-1 hoping to clear up a problem that
I believe started with it. I now cannot boot up into
Windows. I don't want to restore the disk yet because it
wants to format the HD.
My daughter has the same notebook. Could I have her make
me a recover CD and use that to get XP back?

I was wondering too. Could I buy another HD for the
notebook and install Windows on that and make the original
HD a slave and retrieve the data from that?

Or.. Buy Windows XP (not the upgrade) and do a recovery
from that with out having to format the HD?

Thanks for your time,
Jeanne

I can't even get the option to come up and slect safe mode
any more. Would making a MS-DOS start up disk give me
access to "C" dive.

What about making a small 16 bit partition on my "C" drive
and installing Windows 95 or 98. I noticed that when I
run the program on the Recovery CD it test all the
hardware and says it is working ok.

Jeanne,

I would be remiss if I didn't first advise you to seek assistance from
Hewlett Packard on the issue. With that said, let me see if I can offer
some assistance. I believe there is an option on the HP recovery media
that will allow for a non-destructive recovery. (I would defer to a HP
support tech on this point)

When you say you cannot get into Windows, at what point does it fail?
Depending, we may be able to resolve the problem you are having without
going through the whole recovery process at all.

(much snippage)

Here's a quick and relatively inexpensive solution: take your notebook
to a good local computer repair shop (*not* a CompUSA or Best Buy type)
and have them salvage your data and reinstall Windows. They can easily
slave your notebook hard drive to one of their computers (we all have
hard drive adapters), copy the data, and burn it to a cd. I would
normally charge $40 to do this; approx. $60-80 if the client wanted a
full reinstallation including the programs and data. I don't know where
you live, but if you are in the US prices will be around the same.
