I notice that when I do a search for a file or folder name, it says it
is not searching in hidden folders. Where is the option to set a
search so it does?

Also I was searching for all occurrences of 'desktop.ini', and the
search found a few, but not one I knew existed, namely on my desktop.
Why not?

Thanks

In Search, change the search options and then click the Advanced button
to have Search look for hidden files/folders.

Start | Help and Support is a great reference tool for XP. Search on
well...search for info.
