HEY GUYS CAN SOMEONE TELL ME HOW TO RESTORE SCANREG/SCANREGW FROM MY WIN-XP
INSTALL DISK. i HAVE TRIED THE EXPAND FUNCTION OF MSCONFIG TO NO AVAIL. I AM
NOT SURE IF IT EVEN EXECUTES AFTER FILLING IN ALL OF THE PARMS.

I think System Restore is XP equivalent to scanreg.

Start>Programs>Accessories>System Tools>System restore

Windows XP disk utility is called Check Disk (ScanDisk is no longer necessary).
To start Check Disk
1. Open My Computer, right-click a drive, and then click Properties.
2. On the Tools tab, under Error-checking, click Check Now
then you get a dialog box, check "Automatically fix file system errors"
3. Click Start
How to view the Chkdsk Log Entry:-
You will find the chkdsk log entry in the Application log of Event Viewer.
To access the Event Viewer
.. Go to Control Panel > Administrative Tools> Event Viewer > Application.
.. Look for the Event from the source "WinLogon".

Also to replace/repair files:-
Introduction to using scannow sfc (system file checker)

Description and Explanation of a Cabinet File

PS, please don't use all caps on the NG as it is considered rude and shouting.

Thanks guys for the quick response. I had the unfortunate luck of running
out of disk space on my OS (C:) drive. When the out of disk space msg
flashed it stated that the system could no longer provide the System Restore
services and shutdown this application. I finally discovered that the file
C:\Windows\system32\Logfiles\WMI\trace.log was just about at the capacity of
my OS partition.

The first thing I did was to go into Computer Management and disabled the
WMI Control Properties and temporarily Disabled this service. Next, I
changed the Log file location, and then re-enabled this service. I next
rebooted my system again and attempted to use the System-->System Restore
tab to restart capturing restore points. That's when I rcvd' the following
msg: -An exception occurred while trying to run
"C:\Windows\system32\shell32.dll,Control_Rundll
"C:\Windows\System32\sysdm.cp",System" When I close this error window the
System properties also shuts down. When I attempt to start the System
Restore process from the Help & Support screen I get a "System Restore
Application has encountered a problem and needs to close." I got to
snooping around and found this article on Microsoft's network KB=274092.
This article listed (7) steps to use which included finding the "winint.ini"
file and renaming it and restarting the system. I could not find this file
on my WINXP - SP2 system. at the bottom of this article it states that if
the prior (7) steps do not work it says to run "scanreg /fix" to repair
damaged portions of the registry.

To make a long story short I need to get System Restore operational again
because I have outstanding updates from Microsoft that will probably need
access to the restore app. Thanks for the quick response . . .Tom J.

Thanks Ted for the quick response. I figured as much when I finally looked
on my install CD and did not find any module there with the starting
characters of "SCAN" I have responed with a full explanation to "Dixonian69"
below. . . .Tom J.

Thanks Bert for the quick response. I have provided some details into why I
need to restore access to the System Restore files in the reply to
"Dixonian69" above. Thanks for your help . . . TomJ

I have around 30gb of space on this partition. I went snoopy around again
and found that System Restore has an entry in the Services App under
Computer management app. When I select the "Start" service link I get the
following error: Could not start the System Restore Service on Local
Computer. Error 3: The system cannot find the path specified.? The 'Path to
executable:' is filled in as follows: "C:\WINDOWS\System32\svchost.exe -k
netsvcs"? I'm not sure what this error message is referring to. I also have
the following folder: C:\System Volume Information directory which I cannot
gain access to (Access Denied) type of error. I am hoping that there is some
type of utility routine or some type of procedure that I can go thru to help
resolve this problem.
Thanks in advance . . .Tom J.

Thanks Bert, this helped me to resolve my problem. Thanks to everyone who
might have contributed.
