I don't know what happened but by daughter was using my
computer and
called for help. When I came to see, Internet Explorer
would not
work. My list of the the Programs in
the "Start" "Programs" menu were
gone. It just said "empty". I managed to get Internet
Explorer
reinstalled by editing my regedit and re-installing it.
I've been to
Microsoft knowledge base but cannot find anything on how
to re-install
the program list. Anyone know of a way to fix this? I
have a HP
Laptop and don't have the install disk for XP. I would
think there is
a way to edit the registry to load the links for installed
programs.

Thanks for your time,
Pete

I already tried that for several dates and it kept coming
up "can't restore to that date"

Kelly,
first, thanks for the help! I tried the undo. It didn't
work. I will try to clear up and give more clues here.

I use the classic mode in the Task Bar properties. So if
you click "Start", "Programs" the next window where you
expect a list of all your installed programs it just has
the word "empty" If I use the default setting for
the "Start" property I am able to install some programs
but are limited to 30 by Windows, but at the bottom of the
list where it shows "more programs" again there is nothing
there. When I click on it nothing happens.

Another strange thing is I attempted to do a defrag. I
had to go into Windows Explorer and find the defrag app.
in the system 32 folder. When I clicked on that an error
message pops up stating the it may not be a mmc program
and it is looking for a *.msc file. If I do a search
there isn't any *.msc file on my hard drive.

Another thing is when I hit the alt clt delete keys the
task manager is not the same as it was in the past. I
believe before it had a couple of tabs. I think one was a
service tab. Now it come up as a singe window showing
what is currently running with the options of switching,
ending, or new task.

Thanks for your time
Pete

Hi Pete,

Run the undo from line 154 (right hand side)
http://www.kellys-korner-xp.com/xp_tweaks.htm

Although, if that were set, All Programs would not even be listed. See if
it helps and I will check more into this for you in the meantime.

Kelly,
I went to the microsoft KB and found out how to fix the
Task Manager view. It was just a matter of double
clicking on the the boarder edge. After exploring the KB
to find clues to my lost menu list. I am wonder if it has
something to do with the Administrator. I am logged on as
the owner. I have my laptop (the one I use and having
problems wiht) networked with my desktop. I haven't used
it in a long time. I don't keep it connected

Sorry to bring up a old post, thought I would add just incase someone comes to this page in search of a solution as I did. Perhaps you just cleaned up one of those "windows security" mailware/scareware virus. For me it made most of my programs in programs list hidden, just unhide them, it also unchecked the show hidden files so you will also need to check that field again.

C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Start Menu\Programs is the location.
