Hi,

I really hope someone here can help me. The original setting for my windows
media player was in region 2 format. I recently bought a US region 1 DVD and
changed the region setting from 2 to 1 to view the DVD on my media player. It
came up with a box giving me the opinion to do this and said I could change
it up to 4 times. However I now need to change it back as all my other DVD's
are region 2 and I don't know where to find the option to change it back.
This is an emergency, I need instructions on how to reset my windows media
player to region 2.

Open device manager (Control Panel, click "System", click "Hardware", click
"Device Manager".) Expand the tree for "DVD/CD-ROM drives". Right-click
your DVD-ROM and select "Properties". The option to change the region is on
the "DVD Region" tab.

As you stated, you can only change this option a limited number of times.
This is a hardware setting, *not* a Windows setting, so once you've reached
the limit -- that's it, you cannot change it again.

If you are trying to watch DVD's not within your region, a better option may
be to copy the DVD to your HD (and, in the process, remove the region code)
and watch it that way. There are programs which will accomplish this for
you. This may result in debate, but if you own the movie, this should be
within your rights.

See the reply from DJB and....

The movie industry do this to stop you taking advantage of the cheaper
prices for DVD in other countries/regions than your own. The hardware allows
you to change region a few times but usually only 4 (eg to cater for people
who emigrate). If you wanted to get around this restriction you would have
to look for tools to "hack" the drive or buy a "Region free" or "unlocked"
drive.
