Need freeware to open .shp files

www.esri.com sells ARCgis, a program that will open files with the .shp
extension.

Does anyone know of freeware that will do this? (I don't need to
manipulate the data, I only need to see it.)

this extension is used by many different programs. "ESRI GIS &
Mapping Software Shape File" is one of nine possible content
formats listed here:
http://filext.com/detaillist.php?extdetail=shp

Are you sure, yours is an ARCgis file?

Maybe you wanna try the free ArcExplorer from ESRI?
http://www.esri.com/software/arcexplorer/index.html

Have not tried it, just my first idea.

If ArcExplorer doesn't work, try OpenJUMP--an open source GIS I'm
involved with.
