Dr. Pastor

I need a free "downloadable" AntiVirus program.
(The machine it will be used on is not connected
to the Internet.)
Any recommendation?
Thanks for any guidance!

I like avast

Me too, but the OP wrote
"The machine it will be used on is not connected

Then I don't think Avast! would be a good choice.

F-Prot for DOS

Free for home users on personal workstations. I use it on Win2k.

http://www.f-prot.com/download/home_user/download_fpdos.html

Get the latest signature files.

Isn't it still the case that F-prot for dos does not support long
file names so will not work correctly on a NTFS partition
(with the possible exception that if short file name is enabled
in windows it may be able to scan most files).

http://www.f-prot.com/products/home_use/dos/

"System requirements: "

"F-Prot Antivirus for DOS will run under Windows 3.x, Windows 95, 98, or UNIX, LINUX or Macintosh workstation running a DOS or
Windows emulator. "

I'm curious. Why do you need av on a computer that is not connected to the
net?

Disks? CDs? Just for kicks?
For scanning CDs, an on demand scanner like
Antidote would be fine. It doesn't disinfect, but
you can't disinfect read only media anyway.

This uses the Kaspersky engine and database which is one
of the best on the market.

A similar alternative mwave (also kaspersky based and no disinfect)
can be found here:-
http://www.mwti.net/antivirus/free_utilities.asp

Mwave is updated more often, however I've found mwave has
an annoying habit of removing "invalid" (ie valid) start-up
entries from my registry.

If you have access to the net from another machine, Stinger may be a
good choice. It is small and can be placed on a USB thumb drive.
