I use WinXP Home with IE6.

I have a few DVD's that I laid aside because they
wouldn't work to copy to when I tried to use them.
I just used another DVD when that happened.
Is there a way to check these DVD's to see if they
are useful? I can't read them in the windows explorer.

Which DVD burning software are you using? Most of these programs have a
built-in utility that will give you the disk information.

DVDInfoPro - 90-day trial but has ads...please refer to following url
http://www.dvdinfopro.com/
When bundled with Roxio creator suite (unlimited, no ads)

I'm not familiar with Hotburn, but check the options and toolbars for a disk
information item.
